New Home!

13th January 2010

The site is now running at a new home alongside nearby.org.uk. Please be patient if there a few things broken, we are currently testing all features to make sure they work.

We don't intend to change anything - so the site will still look and work the same as it has always done - just with a new admin.

All site functions, including registration of new users, should be now functional.

Baldongan | 2010-10-23 | O 240 574| Elev:0 | FB:NA | Pillar:Definitely Missing | View:Excellent | kryten2x4p
Long gone. Confirmed by a local Trig Point visit logger who has lived in Map 43 all his life.

Belfast Triangulation Pillar | 2010-09-23 | J 337 718| Elev:0 | FB:OSBM 3211 | Pillar:Good | View:Mostly Obscured | Ross
The original Divis Triangulation Pillar which now sits in Stranmillis Court, off the Stranmillis Road in Belfast. The pillar was originally sited at J2807775479. The pillar was removed from Divis Mountain in the 1970s due to the installation of some communications equipment. It now sits in Stranmillis Court, where the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland are based - the pillar sits in the corner of their car park. The original flush bracket on the pillar was numbered OSNIBM 2073, but this had been removed or destroyed. A replacement bracket, numbered OSBM 3211, has been put installed instead, probably for aesthetic purposes. This is probably the bracket that was previously located on a bridge in Fermanagh (exact grid reference H4828025472).

Situated on the eastern Ards Peninsula on a hill south of Ballyhalbert. Access is fairly easy - follow a track uphill from the Back Road which leads to a covered reservoir. The pillar is in the corner of a field just behind the reservoir. It is slightly damaged, probably after being hit by a tractor or two. FB is intact. Views are excellent - over the Ards Peninsula and out over the Irish Sea towards the Isle of Man.

Mullaghcarn | 2010-08-24 | H 5104 8097| Elev:0 | FB:OSNI BM 3178 | Pillar:Damaged | View:Completely Obscured | dino
Walked up the tarmac road from 54 41.564 N, 7 14.022 W on the B48 where there is a sign detailing the route as part of Cairn Sunday. The sign shows two other routes which may be more challenging. As reported by JC unfortunately the trig has been vandalised as part of a FSNI attempt to show visitors the surrounding area. Not much use to me today as its now very faded and the cloud and rain were depressingly vicious for the end of August.

Slimero | 2010-06-27 | J 3892 9369| Elev:302 | FB:3464 | Pillar:Good | View:Completely Obscured | kryten2x4p
Trig point in excellent condition. Totally surrounded by a young pine copse of approx 100 square metres in area. No visibility through trees. Had to crawl on hands and knees to get to pillar. Spider not centred in top of pillar. Screw cap is in place. Strap down U fixings are all perfect. Very little wear on pillar facings. Some moss on facings. Flush bracket only has OSBM on plate, no NI. Co-ordinates may be slightly out due to the trees.

Carn Hill | 2010-06-27 | J 3466 8911| Elev:317 | FB:2069 | Pillar:Slightly Damaged | View:Excellent | kryten2x4p
Trig point in good condition. Some slight bump chips to the top edges. 360° views from here to several other trig point positions. Cavehill, Lough Neagh, the Sperrins, Carrickfergus and Bangor can all be seen. Pillar faces slightly weather worn. Spider and screw cap are in place and strap down fixings good. Thanks to the farmer for allowing me to drive up to within 100m walking distance from TP.
